The course focuses on building students' confidence and capability in preparing and delivering high-quality self-tapes for the UK acting industry, especially when English is an additional language. Working in a safe, supportive environment, participants will gain practical tools to approach different genres and scenarios with clarity and confidence. The course offers technical guidance, creative preparation, and reflection, equipping students with strategies to deliver authentic and compelling self-tapes.
Students will learn how to prepare technically and creatively for a Self Tape in English and some Acting exercises you can use. Even for Professional Actors, it is useful to revisit the basics, ensuring that you have the best set up and preparation techniques for your practice.
You will unlock the secrets to success in English auditions.

What will I learn?
- You will cover how 'Genre' can intersect with Self Taping, exploring how to approach Procedural, Fantasy, and Period Drama tapes.

You will explore how to approach Self Tapes that include 'Complex Action' such as driving, simulated violence, props, and multiple characters.
- Technical set-up: backdrop, lighting, framing, eyelines, and equipment
- Tackling complex action scenes involving intimacy, multiple characters, and props
- Preparation techniques: units/beats/actions, character diamonds, Uta Hagen questions
- Learn to give and receive feedback effectively. You will have the opportunity to film two self-tapes, receiving verbal feedback on your work.

Meet the Course tutor
Gary Pillai
Gary Pillai is an actor, educator, and creative leader whose career spans more than two decades across film, television, theatre, and audio drama. He currently serves as Head of Screen Graduate Projects, Digital Assets & Partnerships at LAMDA, where he oversees the drama school’s advanced screen training and industry collaborations across the BA (Hons), MA and MFA Acting Programmes.
On stage, Pillai has appeared in leading roles for many of the UK’s most prominent companies, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre, Royal Exchange Manchester, Birmingham Rep, and Sadler’s Wells. He has also worked with innovative ensembles such as Shared Experience, Complicite, Tara Arts, Tamasha, and Kali Theatre, contributing to productions known for their scope, physicality, and cultural impact.
Pillai’s screen career includes roles in a wide range of acclaimed television series, among them The Buccaneers, Game of Thrones, Bodyguard, Breeders, Strike, Ridley, Black Earth Rising, Screw, The Canterville Ghost, Silent Witness, Citizen Khan, Hard Sun, Torchwood, and Mammals, as well as the recent series Babies and The Capture. On film, he starred opposite Michelle Yeoh in Far North, directed by Oscar and BAFTA winner Asif Kapadia.
For radio, he has worked extensively with the BBC, including The Archers and lent his voice to the narration of Shyam Selvadurai’s Funny Boy for Book at Bedtime.
In addition to his acting career, Pillai has held senior positions in arts education, previously serving as BA Course Leader at Drama Studio London and Head of Outreach at the Oxford School of Drama. He has taught and directed across a number of leading institutions, including as an Associate Lecturer at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), Visiting Director at Rose Bruford, Guidhall, Manchester School of Theatre, and the Actors Studio, and Guest Lecturer at the Royal College
of Art.
